Policía Local officers dispatched by San Javier Council to sort out the outdoor drinking sessions in El Zoco have not managed to solve the bingeing issue in the area. Residents confirm that despite the police presence the large groups of youths drinking have still been present together with all the issues it brings with it. Neighbours are still unable to get a night’s sleep during the weekends. San Javier Councillor for Tourism and Beaches Antonio Martínez admits, “It is a big problem as 80% of them are underage between 14-16 years old and that is a factor which ties up police hands”. Despite that, Martínez assures that the local law enforcement has at least managed to quell some of the issue and “Partly reduce the number of people drinking”. Martinez also indicates that some youths have been arrested carrying out acts of vandalism, “Including one who was throwing bottles”, says the councillor.
According to Martínez, who is also the La Manga -San Javier local mayor, the bingeing in El Zoco has become so big and complicated that it has “Been impossible to completely eradicate it with two or three police beats at the end of the summer”. Martínez sends a message out to local residents on the area assuring “This administration is committed to solving this problem” but states that for that to happen there must be various things done throughout the winter season. The councillor has preferred not to enter into which factors would be the most appropriate but it seems that the town-planning and security departments would need to be further involved.
