Nearly tenfold increase within La Manga, Cabo de Palos and Los Belones wards compared to rest of Cartagena and San Javier Councils combined
Our active electoral population has grown a considerable amount. There are currently 6135 eligible voters summoned to cast their vote in one of the three polling stations to be set up in La Manga and Los Belones on Sunday 22nd May 2011. This is a 12% rise from the figure at the 2008 general election which registered 5479 people on the official census. The difference is 656 more voters this time around; a worthy increase when compared to the remainder of the electoral population in the rest of both Cartagena and San Javier borough councils being just 1.7%
We can conclude that the most important rise in voters has been noted between the Cabo de Palos and Plaza Bohemia area. This ward casts its vote at the polling station in the Colegio Meditarráneo school which saw 2569 people pass through its doors for the 2008 generals; this year on the 22nd May it is expected to receive 2914 registered locals: a boost of 345 people (52.6% of the area’s growth). Los Belones’ makes up 19% of the total growth in the area as its electoral population in 1631 numbered 2008 and has now risen by 124 people to total 1755 who will be casting their vote at the poll situated in San Isidro Labrador school.
Finally, we can also talk of significant growth in the San Javier Council administered section of La Manga strip; 187 more on the census than in 2008 (28.5% of the area’s growth). The increase in voters can be interpreted as a factor in the overall growth of the general population and these percentages allow us to clarify the way in which the increase in the number of inhabitants is being distributed throughout La Manga, Cabo de Palos and Los Belones during various periods.
